Passport Services in India: Apply, Renew and Track Online
A passport is the main identity document for international travel. In India, passports are issued through the Passport Seva portal, regional passport offices, Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK). You can apply, book an appointment, pay fees and track your status online.
How to Apply for a New Passport Online
- Register and log in at passportindia.gov.in.
- Choose Apply for Fresh Passport and fill in the form.
- Pay the fee and book an appointment at your nearest PSK or POPSK.
- Visit with original documents for verification and biometrics.
- Complete police verification, if required, and wait for delivery by speed post.

- Aadhaar card or other identity proof
- Date of birth proof (birth certificate or school leaving certificate)
- Address proof (electricity bill, bank passbook or rental agreement)
- Old passport (for renewal or re-issue)

Tatkal vs Normal Passport
A Tatkal passport is for urgent travel. It costs more and is processed much faster, and police verification is often done after issue. A normal passport follows the standard timeline, with verification usually done first.
Passport Renewal and Re-issue
You can renew a passport online when it is close to expiry or has expired. The same process covers lost or damaged passports, name change after marriage, and address or date of birth corrections.
