Citizenship Services in India: Apply, OCI Card and Renunciation

Indian citizenship is governed by the Citizenship Act, 1955 and is handled by the Ministry of Home Affairs. You can acquire it by birth, descent, registration, naturalisation or the special CAA route. Most applications are now filed online, including OCI card services for people of Indian origin abroad.

Ways to Get Indian Citizenship

  • By birth: for persons born in India, subject to the conditions of the Act.
  • By descent: for persons born abroad to Indian citizen parents.
  • By registration: for persons of Indian origin or those married to an Indian citizen, after the required residence period.
  • By naturalisation: for foreign nationals who meet the long-residence requirement.
  • Under CAA: a dedicated online section for eligible applicants.

  • Proof of Indian origin or marriage, where applicable
  • OCI card, if you hold one
  • Renunciation undertaking and character references
Requirements differ by category and can change. Check the official portal before applying.

OCI Card and e-OCI

The OCI card gives people of Indian origin long-term travel and residence benefits, but it is not citizenship. Under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, OCI registration and renunciation applications are submitted electronically, and an e-OCI option has been introduced alongside the physical card.

Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

India does not allow dual citizenship. If you take another country’s citizenship, you must follow the official renunciation process and surrender your Indian passport. OCI holders who renounce OCI status must surrender the original card.
