Police Services in India: File FIR, Get Verification and Report Cyber Crime

Many police services in India can now be used online or by phone. You can file complaints, report lost items, apply for a police verification certificate and report cyber fraud. Exact services depend on your state police, so always check your state police website.

How to File an FIR

Under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), an FIR for a cognizable offence is registered under Section 173. Information can be given orally or by electronic communication.

  1. Go to the nearest police station, or open your state police website’s citizen services section.
  2. Give details of the incident: date, time, place and people involved.
  3. If filed online, complete any signature or verification step the police ask for.
  4. Collect your free copy of the FIR and note the FIR number.

What is a Zero FIR?

A Zero FIR can be registered at any police station, even if the crime happened elsewhere. The station then transfers it to the police station with jurisdiction.

Police Verification Certificate

A police verification certificate or character certificate may be needed for jobs, tenants, domestic staff and passports. Many state police websites offer online applications.

  • Identity proof (Aadhaar or similar)
  • Address proof
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Purpose letter or application form
Documents and fees differ by state. Check your state police website before applying.

Report Lost Items and Theft

Many states let you file a lost report online for mobile phones, documents and other articles. Vehicle theft usually needs an FIR. Keep the report copy, as banks, mobile operators and passport offices often ask for it.

Report Cyber Crime

For online fraud, call the 1930 helpline or file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Report quickly, because speed improves the chance of stopping the money transfer.
