Government Grievance Redressal in India: File a Complaint and Track Status Online
If a government office or service has failed you, you can file a public grievance online. India’s main platform is CPGRAMS (Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System), a 24×7 portal for complaints about service delivery. This guide explains how to file, track and appeal.
How to File a Grievance on CPGRAMS
- Open pgportal.gov.in and register (one time).
- Log in and choose whether the organisation is central or state government.
- Select the ministry or department and write your complaint clearly. There is no fixed format.
- Submit and save your registration number.
- Wait for the reply by SMS or email.
How to Check Grievance Status
Open the portal and choose View Status of Your Grievance. Enter the unique registration number you received after filing. You can also send a reminder or provide clarification on a past grievance from the same portal.
Timeline for Resolution
- Standard timeline: grievances should ordinarily be resolved within 21 days.
- If more time is needed: an interim reply should be given.
- If not resolved on time: you can take it up with the Director of Public Grievances of the concerned ministry or department.
What If You Are Not Satisfied? File an Appeal
- Wait for the grievance to be closed and give your feedback rating.
- If you rate the resolution Poor, the appeal option is enabled.
- File the appeal within 30 days, using your registration number.
- Track the appeal on the portal. It is decided by the Nodal Appellate Authority.
State Government Grievances
Many states also run their own grievance systems, such as CM helplines, Jansunwai or Lok Shikayat portals. For state matters, use CPGRAMS and select the state, or check your state government’s official portal.
What Is Not Treated as a Grievance?
Some matters are not handled as grievances, such as cases pending in court and requests for information under the RTI Act. For information requests, use the RTI process instead.
