Consumer Complaints in India: How to File Online and Get Your Refund

If you received a defective product, poor service or an unfair deal, you have rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. You can use the free National Consumer Helpline (1915) first, or file a case in a consumer commission online through the e-Jagriti portal.

Step 1: Complain to the Company First

Send a written complaint or email to the company and keep proof. Note dates, order numbers and replies. This also helps if you later send a legal notice.

Step 2: Use the National Consumer Helpline

Call 1915 or register at consumerhelpline.gov.in. The service is free and can help you reach a settlement with the company without going to court. You can track your complaint online.

Step 3: File a Case in a Consumer Commission

  1. Open e-jagriti.gov.in (earlier called e-Daakhil) and register.
  2. Choose the correct commission for your claim value.
  3. Fill in the complaint with facts, dates and the relief you want.
  4. Upload your bills, proof, notice and an affidavit.
  5. Pay the fee online and save your case number.
A common reason for rejection is filing in the wrong commission or submitting a weak affidavit. Check both before submitting.
